Final Music Video:
Frame 1 – This shot shows one of the actresses snorting a line of cocaine and accompanies the lyrics “Oh that face, makes me want to party.” Here I have matched the visuals to the lyrics through the use of amplification; a term that can be used to describe the correlation between most of the visuals and lyrics in my music video. Rather than simply illustrating the lyrics (for example showing the couple at a physical party) I have instead amplified their meaning and shown what my artist would deem to be ‘partying’ which is simply getting high.
Frame 2 – This screen grab typifies the way a record company, such as republic records, would want their artist to represented. As a young, attractive, female pop artist it was inevitable that in order to appeal to the masses my artist Belle would need to have a sexual star image. 8/10 of the world’s most commercially successful female artists including Beyonce, Rihanna and Katy Perry all use their sexual appeal as a way to sell their music and it soon became evident to me that in the music industry “sex sells”! Through the use of fragmented shots, such as this one focusing on my artist’s breasts, I have presented her as a highly sexualised attractive female which is precisely how a modern record label would need an artist such as Belle to be promoted.
Frame 3 – The costuming and make up used in my video really highlights my use of music genre in my video. The Lana Del Rey track ‘Young & Beautiful’ is of the pop genre and therefore so is my constructed artist Belle. Other successful pop stars such as Taylor Swift have iconised the use of red lipstick, a trend that has become associated with commercial/popular culture in the western world. This particular image shows how through the styling of my artist and the close up camera shots used to emphasis this I have conveyed the genre of pop.
Frame 4 – This shot shows the intertextual reference to the 1997 film Titanic. The shot shows the two actors re enacting the iconic embrace that is associated with titanic when Jack supports Rose from behind as she looks out to the horizon from the bow (front) of the Titanic. By using the titanic, the second most commercially successful film of all time, as an intertextual reference I have likened the relationship of Belle and her partner to that of Jack and Rose; suggesting the strong bond between the characters and foreshadowing the tragic ending.
Frame 5- This screen grab shows a shot that demonstrates my use of camera in my music video. This particular image was taken from the argument scene in which an over-the-shoulder shot was used for maximum effect. By positioning the camera behind Belle’s shoulder whilst focusing on the other actress’ face it physically positioned the audience behind the artist in the dispute. Even though the camera was focused on her partners facial expressions the audience could still see Belle’s reactions through the use of an over-the-shoulder shot allowing them to stay with her throughout the argument.
Frame 6- This shot exemplifies my use of dynamic lighting in the performance scenes of my music video. For this effect three point lighting was used through two soft-boxes acting as a key and fill light and a work light being used as a back light. As our artist has dark hair and was wearing a black costume it was important that I didn’t ‘lose’ her in the black background, this is wear the back light came in extremely useful. It helped separate her from the background, illuminating her outer figure and also acted as a hair light.
Frame 7- This shot demonstrates my use of mis-en-scene. The entire space was constructed for the purpose of this scene, turning a games room into a squat type setting. Props such as old pizza boxes, alcohol bottles, rubbish and clothes gave the location a messy and youthful look representing the recklessness of the central relationship. Pin up girls dressed in bikinis were posted to the wall along with a printed out gay rights poster which supports the narrative plot that was centred a lesbian couple.
Frame 8/9- Frame 8 shows that I have watched other music videos as after initially filming my performance shots I added some more scenes after the released of Beyonce’s visual album for which I took inspiration from the performance shots in ‘mine’ (a video featured on the visual album) I then recreated what I had seen for some of my performance shots towards the end of my music video. Frame 9 also shows I have watched a variety of existing music videos as the idea for my bath scenes came from Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ video, recreating some of the shots with a homosexual couple as opposed to the hetrosexual couple used in we found love.
Frame 1- A shot that shows a link between lyrics and visuals can be seen in Miley Cyrus’ ‘We Can’t Stop’ in which she amplifies the line “Coz we came to have so much fun now”. The shot shows Miley in a sexual position presenting herself to the camera and amplifies the lyrics as it shows the audience what Miley would deem to be having ‘so much fun’: sexual interactions.
Frame 2- This frame was taken from Beyonce’s ‘Rocket’ video which I took the inspiration for my fragmented shower scene shots. This particular shot and Beyonce in general typifies the way a record label would want a young, female artist to be represented; as a sexual object. Beyonce’s ‘bootylicious’ behind has become iconic and it is through fragmented shots such as these that isolate and focus on her sexual body parts that help her appeal to a mass audience as a sexual object.
Frame 3- This shot was taken from the original ‘Young and Beautiful’ music video by Lana Del Rey. It shows how genre has been used also through the make up and costuming, the ‘bling’ jewellery and red lips have become symbols of popular culture therefore many artists within the pop genre use these symbols to connect and appeal to their audience.
Frame 4- This frame shows one of the most iconic scenes from the 1997 film Titanic. I used this film as an intertextual reference as it will make my audience subconsciously associate my narrative with the strength of the love story within Titanic. It is a film that the age group my music video is targeted at will have grown up with and so my audience will be familiar with.
Frame 5- Like my use of an over-the-shoulder shot, this camera technique was also used during an argument scene in Nicki Minaj’s ‘Right Thru Me’ video. The over-the-shoulder shot here helps to keep both characters expressions in view even when the camera focuses on a particular character, this can be particularly useful when trying to capture the conflicting opinions of two people.
Frame 6- The three point lighting used in Lorde’s ‘Tennis Court’ was where I took the inspiration for the lighting in my opening performance shots. By placing a back light directly behind the artist it really separates her from the black background, casting a saint like glow around her body and illuminating the edges of her hair. I really liked this lighting technique as it makes a very simple set up suddenly so much more interesting and hadn’t seen it used in a music video before.
Frame 7- This shot comes from the music video for ‘Give Me Love’ by Ed Sheeran. Like one of my locations, the mis-en-scene used in this shot suggests it is set in a squat and this is where I took the idea of putting a mattress on the floor as it seems a temporary substitute for a bed suggesting the inhabitants are unstable and always on the move.
Frame 8/9- After watching Beyonce’s music video for ‘Mine’ I took inspiration from the lighting and framing used in one of her performance shots, by filming from the bare shoulders up it suggested without being distasteful or explicit in the slightest. For frame 9 I took inspiration from the bathroom scene shots in Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ video in which the couple sit in the bath fully clothed starring intensely into each others eyes, I liked this shot as it was very dramatic and dreamy which fitted in with my music video theme very well.
Iv’e had my ups and downs with Final Cut Pro but overall it has been an essential piece of technology in enabling me to construct my music video. When I began the year I had no previous experience with video editing software and through a mixture of trial and error, help from teachers and watching online tutorials I am now extremely confident with the program. Below are a series of screen grabs that demonstrate the different processes and techniques used throughout:
This screen-grab shows the opening lip sync sequence which is one of the first parts of the video I edited. I began by selecting the appropriate clip and dragging it over the song I would then make tiny adjustments to make sure the lip movement was precisely accurate with the song. Once I was happy I would then mute the original clip so that all that could be heard was the track.
Like Carol Vernallis, I used the technique of cutting to the beat at relevant moments throughout my video. This screen grab shows such a moment. I would look at the waves of the track and place a new shot at the beginning of each peak as this shows the most significant beat. This was achieved through the use of the cut tool and the position tool.
Some of my shots lacked camera movement, and where appropriate I added the movement in my post production through the kens burns option. This gave be a cropped start and end point for my clip meaning I could create pans and sweep shots as if they were filmed like that. Adding camera movement in post production as opposed to when filming also helped keep the shot stable.
For this drug hallucination scene I wanted an effect that would portray the characters state of mind to the audience. By layering multiple shots upon one another and then reducing the opacity it gave a warped dream like effect and placed the audience within the intoxicated mind of the character.
